BIG changes coming

Can you believe it?  I found this old blog site while searching for a place to create a new one.  Great memories looking back through these old posts.  So very much has changed though since my last post 7 years ago.  We were interested in starting a new blog because of major changes that are coming for our family -- in less than a year we will be moving from the east coast of Virginia to the Andes mountain range in Ecuador, South America. We want somewhere to document what we are thinking, feeling, going through as we prepare for this monumental change.  Since I already have this space, I suppose I'll just continue on where I left off 7 years ago.

Let's play catch up on the time in the interim:

- Sarah is now adulting 😃    She is 22 and is working as a firefighter/EMT in Powhatan, VA.  She will   not be going to Ecuador with us.
- Paige is now 10.  She is amazing, creative, passionate, funny, outgoing, smart, and so much more.
- Eli is now 8 and just as amazing.  He loves to read, is whip smart, tender-hearted, generous, and all       boy.
- And Sofia. Oh Sofia. Yep, we had another baby! God's unexpected blessing.  She is now 20 months     old and such a joy.  Never stops moving, like most toddlers. So smart and funny.

Here are the most recent photos I have of all four of them.  We are all learning Spanish in preparation for the upcoming move, and she already knows a lot of words.  The kids will probably have to interpret for me; they learn so much more easily, and I seem to never have enough time to study.

Anyway, we are probably looking at about April-ish for the move.  I am slowly trying to weed through things in the house and donate, sell, etc most everything.  The plan for now is to sell the house and just about everything in it, take just clothes and a laptop, rent a place in Cuenca, then travel and explore for a year to find a permanent homebase.  Next time I will explain how we got to this divine plan and where we are emotionally right now.

The slowly disappearing home

As much as I try to ignore it, my home is slowly disappearing.  We are two weeks out now from leaving Virginia.  The pictures are off the walls, we are sleeping on the floor, and someone just drove away with our second to last sofa.  Suitcases are packed and crowded into the corner waiting to be loaded into a rental van.  I am trying to find homes for half-used laundry soap and Panko bread crumbs because I can't stand waste and throwing it away bothers me.  Half of me is so sad to leave and half of me is excited to arrive in Ecuador. My shoulders ache from lifting suitcases to test the weight (and maybe a little from anxiety).  I fear I will forget a million things, but I'm trying my best to remember them all. Time with family has been ramped up a bit; we just celebrated my parent's 50th wedding anniversary a few days ago with both of my brothers and their families.  I think I have seen family more in the last month than in the last year combined....

Slow going

So this has been our experience so far with having the house on the market....note the lack of a SOLD sticker, or even UNDER CONTRACT. We were thinking it would go quickly based on what the listing agent (a fantastic, God-loving, Sister-in-Christ we knew from when Tom was pastoring at Community Church) told us and the market right now. We had a call for a showing the morning after it went on the market, which was encouraging, and the couple loved it but not the neighborhood so much. That is tough to hear because we know how blessed we have been to live in this neighborhood for 15 years. Yes, it is a mix of VERY old and new, some not in such good shape, but the people are fantastic.  It is what I will miss the most.  Standing in the street talking to my neighbors in the spring and summer while a motley crew of kids rides/runs/scooters/crawls around us all. Community appreciation day at the church with free food, bonfires, sweets, bounce houses, car shows, music, etc.  ...

Things are moving right along. Wish it were warmer so the kids could go outside. Last week, we had a couple of nice days so i did get to take them to the park for an hour or so one day. But i really miss nice warm days, working in the yard while the kids play. Eli now has 6 teeth and 2 more coming in. He is crawling all over the place and getting into everything. Disgustingly, one of his favorite things to play with is Paige's potty. He is eating table food now and growing like crazy. He was over 21 pounds at his 9 month checkup. Paige is doing great. She's extremely talkative and precocious. Not entirely potty-trained yet, but doing great. She is only wearing Pull-Ups for naps and outings, and of course a diaper at night. She has had the occasional accident, but mostly is very aware and gets to the potty on time. She has storytime at the library on Mondays again, and this time i signed her up to go in without me.
